Mayo —
The Lafayette High Hornets wasted little time Friday night, Sept. 7, in dispensing with the visiting Bell High School Bulldogs in a Class 1A football match-up that saw the home team score 42 unanswered points in the first half of play.
The Hornets were able to spread the scoring around and both sides of the ball. The defense added points to the board with a 18 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Kenny Johnson and a 58 yard punt return by J.R. Bass while keeping the Bulldogs scoreless until under a minute remaining in the contest.
Quarterback Brycen Lee had two touchdowns passing connecting with Rodney Brown for the first score of the night and then with Noah Leake in the second quarter.
On the ground for the Hornets, J.R. Bass and Lee Jones combined for a touchdown each on the night that saw many of the starter getting limited work in the lopsided game. The Hornets travel to Dixie County to take on a talented team in Cross City this Friday and won't return to play back in Mayo until Oct. 12 for homecoming.
