It was Hornet versus Hornet Friday in a tough defensive battle. Lafayette finally fell to district foe Hawthorne 20-13.
“Hawthorne was as good as we thought we were,” said Lafayette Coach Joey Pearson. “Our guys really played hard.”
Lafayette’s defense had given up an average of 7.3 points per game to that point. They played to form Friday, keeping the Hawthorne offense in check.
A pass by senior quarterback Nick Bracewell to Brooks Laminack was intercepted by Hawthorne’s Armand Pittman with 1:23 left to play, and Lafayette’s fate was sealed. Earlier, Hawthorne’s Daniel Gutierrez had stripped the ball from Arthur Sellers and run 30 yards for the go-ahead score.
Bracewell completed 17 of 24 passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns. He threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Antwan Brown in the second quarter and a 31-yard scoring pass to Brown in the third.
Arthur Sellers and Alan Drivers played consistently well once again.
“I am proud of our effort and the improvements we have made so far this season,” Pearson said. “ We have to regroup now and find a way to beat ACD (Arlington County Day School) and get in the playoffs.”
Lafayette falls to 5-2, 5-1 in District 2-1B. Hawthorne improves to 7-0 (6-0 in district).
