The Lady Hornets basketball team hosted two tough opponents to start the 2005-06 season, and looked impressive in both outings.
A tough second quarter against Madison County saw the ladies go into the locker room down by three points.
The strategy was simple by Madison County. Foul Natalie Land whenever she touched the ball. Land went to the stripe for 29 attempts, and made 20 of those attempts. Ten of her 14 fourth quarter points would come from the stripe in the final quarter leading the Lady Hornets to a 56-38 win. Land would finish with 32 points, 14 rebounds, 6 assists and had 4 steals.
The difference in the second half was simple. Land scored 14 of the Hornets 20 first half points. Seven Hornets contributed in the second half with Marla Alcazar finishing scoring 5 third quarter points that saw Mayo outscore their opponents 16-2. Sabrina Craig scored 4 of her six points in the second half, while Sharhonda Cherry dropped in 4 third quarter free throws.
Other Hornets scoring was Whitney McGrew 3, Fran Smith 2, Takisha Cherry 2 and Kelsey Land 2.
Next up at the home gym was rival Chiefland. The Lady Indians would stay close at 11-7 closing out the first quarter, but Land would end the quarter with 4 of her game high 22 points which ignited a 10-2 Mayo run. Mayo would outscore the Indians 23-6 in the second quarter enroute to a convincing 67-27 Hornets win.
Coach Blankenship had to be a little more pleased after this game as he watched all ten of his Lady Hornets reach the scoring column and contribute in the win.
Land would add 9 steals to her point total, had 8 rebounds, blocked 2 shots and handed out 3 assists in the standard effort.
Alcazar seemed to find her offensive flow in the game scoring 13 points. She would also grab 4 rebounds with an assist. Defensively, Alcazar collected 3 steals for a very aggressive Lady Hornets defense.
Sabrina Craig stepped it up against Chiefland grabbing 10 boards which led to 8 points. She would also account for 4 steals that led to easy baskets.
Smith scored 7 points for the game, and grabbed 5 rebounds. She would also be credited with 2 steals.
A couple of nice complete games was turned in by Lillie Prine and Sharhonda Cherry. Prine would score 4 points, had 4 rebounds, 1 assist and blocked a shot. Cherry scored 3 points with 6 rebounds and an assist. She would also produce 2 steals.
Takisha Cherry, Ayanna Whidden, Kelsey Land and Gandy each scored 2 points for the Lady Hornets.
Now the schedule gets tough. Tonight. The varsity team will be in Tallahassee Maclay for a 6 pm tipoff. On Friday night, the Lady Hornets send both the JV and varsity teams into battle at the home gym against state favorite North Florida Christian. The JV team will tip off at 3:30 p.m. with the varsity tipping off at 6:30 p.m. On Monday night, both teams will travel to Ocala to meet a very tough Trinity Catholic team. JV starts at 5:30 p.m. with varsity seeing action at 7 p.m. The ladies will return to the home gym on Tuesday night with both teams seeing opening game district play with Bell coming to town. JV starts at 3 p.m. with varsity action at 6 p.m.
