The Lady Hornets ran their record to 4-1 after two tough wins on the road, but dropped a very competitive contest to fourth ranked NFC this past week.
The ladies found themselves in a early hole in Dixie County trailing 13-4 after the first quarter. Mayo would take a two point lead into the locker room however picking up the defense in the second quarter outscoring the Lady Bears 13-2. Mayo would outscore their opponents 32-16 in the second half to pull out a tough 49-31 win.
Natalie Land would score 17 points while pulling down 9 rebounds. She would give out 5 assists and defensively, stole the ball 8 times.
Sunshine Reid may have saved the day for the ladies in this one netting 11 points, while rebounding the ball six times and stole the ball twice. She would also have an assist.
Marla Alcazar picked up her game when it counted scoring 10 points with 6 rebounds, while stealing the ball twice and handed out an assist.
Sharhonda Cherry turned in a nice game scoring 5 points with 2 assists, and stole the ball three times while grabbing a rebound.
Mayo 49 MaClay 30
Another slow start saw the Lady Hornets tied at 7 following the first quarter in MaClay. Land would put that to rest in the second quarter however scoring 15 of her 29 points to push the Hornets out in front comfortably by the half.
Other Lady Hornets netting points was Reid with 10, Alcazar with 6, Whitney McGrew and Smith each with 2 points.
#4NFC 68 Mayo 56
The Lady Hornets would see their four game win streak come to an end at the home gym following a 68-56 loss to the fourth ranked NFC Lady Eagles, but not without a huge effort from the Lady Hornets that gave quite a supreme effort.
Mayo found themselves tied at 10 before a 9 point run by NFC ended the first quarter. Mayo found themselves down by double digits in the second quarter, but as they did the entire game, battled back the last five points of the half to pull within a 30-35 score.
A three point basket by Reid evened the score at 39 early in the third quarter forcing an NFC timeout and had the Mayo gym rocking. NFC ended the third quarter with a couple of key baskets to surge to a 44-49 lead.
A three point basket by Alcazar brought the Hornets within one point at 53-54 early in the fourth quarter, but the shooting from the stripe made the difference in the contest with NFC connecting on 26-29 to pull out the tough win.
Land was incredible in the game scoring 29 points despite being blanketed, and grabbed 9 rebounds with 4 steals, blocked two shots and gave out an assist..
Reid would finish with 11 points and 4 rebounds with 2 steals, a deflection and 1 assist.
Alcazar was able to connect on three from behind the arc to finish with 11 points, a steal and 2 rebounds.

Lady Hornets receive championship rings
Lafayette High School Lady Hornets won the 2011-12 Class 1A Girls Volleyball State Championship on November 16, 2011 with 20 wins and 1 loss. There have been many celebrations to honor them and the latest event was a ring ceremony held in Mayo at the LHS gym on Thurs. March 22, with the entire staff and student body in attendance, along with Superintendent of Schools Tom Lashley.
