Velma Maye Nabholz, 83, of O’Brien, Florida, died Tuesday morning, April 24, at Haven Hospice in Gainesville, Florida following a short illness.

Velma was born June 15, 1928 in La Porte City, Iowa to Hugo J. and Anna Weston Melka. Velma married Lyle L. Nabholz on April 23, 1946 in Emily, Minnesota.

Velma was a kind, meek and gentle spirit. She loved her family and her Lord. Her worn and marked bible was a testament to her faith. She travelled to Europe and throughout the United States and had lived in Iowa, California and Florida. Velma liked to sew, crochet and enjoyed nature.

Velma is survived by her son, Dennis L. (Lynda) Nabholz of O’Brien, Florida; daughter, Susan R. (James) Blonigan of Evansdale, Iowa; 6 grandchildren: James Nabholz of Clarksville, Tennessee; Debra S. Nabholz of Mayo, Florida; Kathleen A. (Robert) Scoles-Norman of Long Beach, California; Christian (Michelle) Russell of Gainesville, Florida; Michael (Cheryl) Russell of Alachua, Florida and Danielle (Erik) Perz of Micanopy, Florida; 8 great grandchildren: Michelle Goodfellow, Justin and Carmen Nabholz, Joshua Nabholz, Stacey, Tessa, Conner, Sara and Dylan Scoles, Cade Russell, Mercedes and Memphis Perz; her sister-in-law, Mary Lou Melka of Independence, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lyle on April 1, 1975; her sisters, Glenda Nabholz, Dorothy Schmidt and Opal Hirsch; and her brothers, Harry and Donald Melka.

Services will be held at the Midway Baptist Church, Mayo, Florida, on Tuesday, May 1 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Midway Baptist Church.

Cremations Only Direct Cremation Service, Gainesville, FL, 352-373-7014, in charge of arrangements.
