Lawrence W. Lee, 98 passed away on April 15, 2010. He was born on July 29, 1911 in Leefield, Ga.

A long time resident of Suwannee County, he is survived by his wife of 75 years, Juanita G. Lee, daughter Sylvia Lee Hafling of Bradenton, Fla., three grandchildren, James Mike Hafling of Port St. Lucie, Fla., David Lawrence Hafling of Tamarac, Fla. and Nancy Lynn Kinsey of Windermere, Fla., as well as seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lawrence Lee served in the military for 44 years beginning his military career in 1931. During World War II he served in Normandy, Northern Europe, Central Europe and Rhineland Campaigns. After the war Mr. Lee reenlisted in the Florida National Guard and was stationed in Live Oak for the duration of his career. Working at the old Armory located next to the old High School Lawrence became very involved with the students. The Armory was the site for high school basket ball games and physical education classes. At one time there were several primary classes held in the Armory and Mr. Lee served as their temporary principal.

A man of God, Lawrence was active in his church. He belonged to the First Baptist Church of Live Oak. Lawrence was also very involved in the community, especially with young people. Having played sports as a young man and loving sports all during his lifetime, Mr. Lee spent many hours umpiring softball games, referring basketball games for high schools, little league and men’s softball teams.

Services for Mr. Lee were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 18, 2010 at First Baptist Church with Rev. Clare Parker and Rev. Steve Swietzer officiating. Interment followed in the Live Oak Cemetery. In lieu of flowers family ask that donations be made to The Florida Baptist Children’s Home.
