In September we reported about the possible merger of the city’s building department with the county’s and contracting those services to Suwannee County.
The measure was tabled and has not been brought back up again.
In Wednesday’s edition of the Democrat we reported that the county is advertising to hire a licensed building inspector. For the past three years, the county has had an interim building official who had a provisional license and could only inspect residential, not commercial, buildings.
The city’s problem before was that a drafted resolution stating the terms of a potential merger would have relied on the county’s interim official which would have ended the career of Roy Rogers, who works for the city, who not only is licensed but has been performing inspections professionally for years.
So county commission, why advertise to hire a building official?
Instead, why not sit down with city officials and hammer out a deal to merge the efforts of the departments and have Mr. Rogers perform the inspections throughout the county?
We’re sure it can be done. And from what we have been hearing from some of the officials, on both sides, talks can begin now.
