It’s summer, and you know what that means.
Folks, please take care of yourselves in the blistering heat that’ll be with us for the next few months.
You know what to do. Plenty of fluids, lots of breaks.
If you take to the water for comfort, use special care there. Flotation devices all around, no drinking if you’re behind the wheel of a boat.
Our local springs are beyond compare. The caves beneath them? Breathtaking, or so we’re told. But dear God, please take care if you go exploring.
Finally, we don’t have to remind you to look out for those who can’t look out for themselves. Never leave kids or dogs alone in a parked car, where temperatures can pop a thermometer.
Now these are all things you already know.
But we would like a word with the person who placed the newborn kittens in the dumpster behind our business office some days back. One of our employees took them home in hopes of nursing them back to health. She took them to a vet, but they were too far gone, having suffered mightily in the summer sun for who knows how long.
Maybe you didn't realize the consequences of your actions. In any case, all we ask is this. The next time you want to dispose of unwanted pets, at least go to the trouble of dropping them off at the county animal shelter. The inconvenience to you will pale in comparison to the pain you’ll have spared an innocent creature.
