Live Oak —
A man was arrested in Madison County on Thursday for fleeing the scene of a crash on I-10 in Suwannee County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Zachary Johnson, 32, Palm Coast, was driving a 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer and was traveling west on I-10 when he swerved off the roadway at mile marker 275 onto the northwestern grassy shoulder, according to FHP. The vehicle then traveled 200 feet in a southwesterly direction. Johnson then struck a large I-beam that was supporting a Florida Department of Transportation sign. The beam was torn and the sign was thrown from its position.
The vehicle continued to travel in a southwesterly direction, striking a state fence with the front of the Lancer. The vehicle went through the fence and collided with a pine tree. The Lancer came to a final rest facing in a southwesterly direction on the west side of the fence.
Johnson then drove back through the fence and left the scene, according to FHP. Debris from the vehicle was left at the scene. Investigator Alfred Hughes III determined that the vehicle was a Mitsubishi and grey in color.
Soon after the wreck occurred, Johnson was found at the westbound I-10 rest area in Madison County.
Johnson was arrested for leaving the scene with property damage.
No injuries were reported and Johnson was transported to the Suwannee County Jail.
