Live Oak man fired upon following Madison County police chase

Madison County — A Madison County Sheriff’s Office deputy fired upon a Live Oak man’s vehicle after the man accelerated directly toward the deputy following a high speed pursuit, according to a Madison County Sheriff’s Office release.
The man was not hit by ammunition and the officer was unharmed.

At 12:39 p.m., a MCSO deputy attempted a traffic stop for a traffic infraction on Benjamin Joseph Koon, 33, Live Oak. Koon was driving a 1996 Ford, traveling east on US 90.

After stopping the vehicle, the deputy approached the driver. Koon then quickly backed up and accelerated, fleeing the scene. The deputy initiated a pursuit engaging blue lights and siren and requested assistance.

A second deputy had positioned himself at the intersection of CR 255 and Plantation Road and deployed a tire deflation device. However, the driver briefly stopped as the deputy un-holstered his firearm and ordered Koon to exit the vehicle. Koon refused to follow the deputy’s commands and accelerated directly towards the deputy. The deputy then discharged his firearm, striking Koon’s vehicle. Koon then lost control of the vehicle and crashed.

Koon was not injured from the shots fired but did sustain injuries from the crash. He was transported to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital for medical examination before being transported to the Madison County Jail.

Koon was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, fleeing and eluding and resisting arrest with violence.
