Signs of the season

Live Oak — Although it is still early in the 2012 campaign season, political sign capers have already begun, according to the Live Oak Police Department.

Candidates’ political signs have already started going missing, LOPD Det. Justin Bates said.

“So far, we only know of a handful, but unfortunately this is something that we deal with during every election,” Bates explained.

Police have no suspects at this time and know of no political motive in the sign thefts, but they are thefts nonetheless.

According to Bates, those responsible for stealing political signs can be charged.

Along with at least one other candidate, District 5 City Councilman James E. “Ed” Rewis has lost signs to theft.

“They do cost money and people should leave them alone,” Rewis said of the sign thefts.
