Live Oak —
The city of Live Oak’s development manager was tasked Tuesday night to draft an amendment to an ordinance that would extend the hours of alcohol sales. If passed, the new hours would mimic the county’s ordinance save for one exception - hard liquor sales on Sunday. The county voted Nov. 20 to extend the hours of alcoholic sales from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday through Saturday, including hard liquor. Sunday alcohol sales of beer and wine would be allowed in the city limits, but not hard liquor.
The drafted amendment, once complete, must be voted on and passed before it can take effect. There must be two public readings of the ordinance.
Live Oak Development Manager George Curtis was given the task of amending the ordinance to be brought back before the board for final approval.
Jeff Anteri has owned Little Bar in Live Oak for about four years and is excited about the prospect.
“If we can amend the liquor liability the county has and stay open seven to two Monday through Sunday like them, that would be a plus for downtown businesses,” said Anteri.
He said that when he read about the county extending the hours of alcohol sales in the Democrat, he was glad until he read it didn’t pertain to the city of Live Oak.
“We’re all Suwannee countians and when I seen that in the paper, I said holy cow that was a great thing, but in my mind it said county so I’m in the county,” said Anteri. “I didn’t know there was such a difference.”
The council passed the measure to give Curtis the go ahead on amending the ordinance 4-1. Councilman Jacob Grantham was the lone vote against.
“This is not a positive step for our little community,” said Grantham. “If this ordinance passes, we will exceed Lake City's alcohol ordinance and be the same hours as the city of Gainesville. This change has not positively effected our neighboring Hamilton County and do not believe it will be a benefit to us either. Alcohol is not the answer to our economic dilemma.”
