Road to Olustee at Suwannee Museum

Live Oak — With the 36th Annual Olustee Battle Reenactment scheduled for Feb. 19, the Suwannee County Museum is proud to announce their plans for this year’s Road to Olustee event.

According to the Suwannee Museum Executive Director and Curator Randy Torrance, the museum will feature a month-long exhibit of history relating to the Civil War and the vital part that Florida and Suwannee County played in this historic time of battle.

The exhibition will continue through the month of February and an open house event will take place on Saturday, Feb. 11 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., Torrance said.

The open house event will feature local re-enactors representing the soldiers of the Leon Rifles of the Department of the Gulf. These soldiers will be onsite throughout the day, offering historic accounts of the life and times of a confederate soldier during February of 1864.

Local Historian and Author Eric Musgrove will present a lecture program at 1 p.m. that day in the Depot Conference Room, adjacent to the museum.

As a kickoff to the open house weekend, Torrance will introduce History Hunters on Friday, Feb. 10, a new program of the museum. History Hunters will consist of a series of gatherings that will be held during the lunch hour on Fridays, Torrance said.

“These gatherings are ‘user friendly’ for both retirees and those still in the workforce,” Torrance explained. “Attendees are encouraged to bring a sack lunch and eat while they learn something fascinating.”

According to Torrance, the History Hunter gatherings will begin at 12:10 p.m., and last for approximately 35 minutes, with a question and answer session afterwards.

“They are scheduled around the lunch hour and participants are encouraged to bring a sack lunch,” Torrance said. “To accommodate work schedules, participants should feel comfortable leaving when required.”

The Suwannee County Museum is located at 208 N Ohio Avenue in Live Oak. The museum is housed in the historic Atlantic Coastline Freight Station and operates Tuesday thru Friday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The museum is closed for lunch from 12 p.m. until 1p.m. each day.
