Live Oak —
The chairman of the Suwannee County Commission said Friday that while the county has not received any letters from atheist organizations regarding prayer at commission meetings, the practice of opening meetings with prayer will continue.
“County commission will continue to have public prayer before the meetings,” said Chairman Jesse Caruthers.
A national atheist organization sent a letter to Live Oak City Hall several days ago, urging an end to public prayer at City Council meetings.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation addressed a single letter to Live Oak Mayor Sonny Nobles and members of the city council.
The co-president of the Madison, Wis.-based group said that at least one Live Oak resident had complained about the prayers.
Annie Laurie Gaylor wrote in the letter that “government prayer is unnecessary, inappropriate, and divisive.”
A similar letter will soon be sent the the county commission, Gaylor said.
