Live Oak —
A sinkhole that was once estimated to be repaired at nearly $600,000 will be completed for about $420,000. The sinkhole at the intersection of Houston Avenue and Maple Street, near Langford Stadium, was first projected to cost $40,000. However, after crew members began pumping grout, Project Manager Lane Lucas realized the damage was far greater than anticipated.
Lucas and Live Oak Public Works Director Brent Whitman stood before the Live Oak City Council on Tuesday at their regular meeting with shocking news that the sinkhole was now projecting to cost around $600,000.
At the time of the meeting, crew members had six days to finish repairs or the project’s 100 percent reimbursement from the Florida Department of Transportation deadline would be up. The city had 180 days from the time of TS Debby to complete projects and receive full reimbursement. That deadline was Monday, Dec. 17 at midnight.
“The crews worked very hard and was able to finish grouting yesterday (Sunday) at about 4:30 p.m.,” said Lucas.
Lucas said crew members worked around the clock until the project was completed. An estimated 47,000 gallons of grout was poured into the sinkhole, raising the total to about $420,000.
“Although it was more than what we expected, it wasn’t as severe as we thought it was,” he said.
“Our next project is to put the road back together,” Lucas said.
Kirk’s Construction is currently on the site digging up the old road and is preparing to pave the road. “All that’s left to do is fill in dirt and run asphalt. Optimistically, the road could be paved by the end of the week.”
Since the deadline for complete reimbursement is up, the city will be responsible for paying 20 percent of an estimated bill of $27,000 to finish reconstruct the road. The remaining 80 percent will be paid by DOT.
