Live Oak —
Bicycle riders under the age of 16 who are not wearing a helmet are subject to be given a citation, according to the Live Oak Police Department.
According to Florida Statute 316.2065, a bicycle rider or passenger under the age of 16 must wear a properly fitted, securely fastened CPSC approved bicycle helmet and the LOPD plans to enforce the law.
Starting Jan. 10, officers with the LOPD will actively enforce Florida’s helmet law, LOPD Lt. Keith Davis stated in a press release.
During the first wave of this enforcement campaign, violators will be issued a written warning and an invitation to a bike safety event, which will be held at Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse on U.S 129 North, Saturday, Feb. 11. During the event, helmets will be provided by the Florida Department of Transportation for up to 275 children who do not have helmets, Davis wrote.
According to Davis, the second wave of the enforcement campaign begins Feb. 13. During this wave, violators of the helmet law may receive citations that require a payment of a fine.
Davis encourages children to begin the new year the right way by riding their bicycles safely with a properly fitted helmet.
For further information, contact Lt. Keith Davis at the LOPD at 386-362-7463.
