Live Oak —
A Branford man was among four suspects arrested Tuesday for burglary and grand theft in Columbia County. The four have been charged with the burglary of the Recycling Center at 2992 SE Washington St., Lake City.
Arrested on charges of burglary and grand theft were:
Steven Edward McGee, 20, of 3911 284th Terr., Branford;
Caleb Maurice Gaskin, 25, 539 SE Brandon Dr., Lake City;
Emmery Ryan Williams, 20, of 1557 SE Alfred Markham St., Lake City; and
Austin Tyler Thomas, 17, of 1706 S.E. Peacock Terr., Lake City.
In response to several recent burglaries, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office conducted a coordinated surveillance operation of local metal recycling centers, according to Ed Seifert of CCSO. According to Seifert the four were caught in the act early Tuesday at the Recycling Center.
Three of the suspects were observed removing copper wire from the business and throwing it over a fence at the business, said Seifert. The fourth suspect, driving a white four-door Saturn, pulled up to the business and the stolen copper wire was loaded into the vehicle. Detectives conducted a traffic stop on the Saturn at CR 245 and US 90. Upon stopping, one of the suspects fled from the vehicle but was quickly captured by Deputy Scott Busby.
Detectives observed that the suspects’ vehicle was loaded with copper wire, both in the interior of the car and the trunk. The estimated value on the stolen wire is in excess of $3,000.00.
The four suspects allegedly admitted to the burglary and theft. They were arrested and booked into the Columbia County Detention Facility without incident. Detectives and crime scene technicians will continue to investigate the previous burglaries to determine if these four suspects were involved in those crimes. Additional charges are pending, say police.
