The Capital City Bank in Branford was robbed Thursday afternoon shortly after 2 p.m. The suspect, Joseph Williams, 55, 110 Joann St., of Perry, was apprehended at 2:30 following quick action by local authorities.
No injuries were reported after Williams entered the bank with a note and demanded cash from a teller, Suwannee County Sheriff Tony Cameron said. Williams told the bank employee he had a gun, but no weapon was displayed nor was one found on Williams or inside the vehicle, Cameron reported. Cameron said that at least two employees were inside the bank at the time of the robbery.
After the robbery, Williams fled the scene in a 1997 Ford pickup truck. Chief Deputy Ron Colvin told the Democrat that SCSO Deputy Caleb McInnis spotted the pickup within a minute of the call from dispatch telling authorities to be on the lookout for the truck.
A high speed chase ensued.
Williams pushed the truck to speeds at times of 100 miles an hour until it was stopped by spike strips in the area of CR 349 and 168th Street near Live Oak. Williams then bailed from the truck but was nabbed shortly thereafter.
"We were very fortunate to have officers in the right place at the right time," Cameron said.
Williams will be charged with at least armed robbery, Cameron said.
