Live Oak: City has first redistricting committee

Live Oak — A redistricting committee has been formed and the City of Live Oak could soon see changes within the next six months. The committee held their first meeting on Tuesday night to begin a project that hasn’t been done in over 20 years.

The committee will meet the last Tuesday of each month in the conference room at city hall at 6:30 p.m. The purpose of these meetings is to determine if redistricting is needed, and, if so, what should it be? The committee is expected to meet each month until July before presenting a proposal to the city council in August. The council will then decide to adopt the proposals or continue with further discussion.

City Attorney Erny Sellers explained the Sunshine Law of Florida to the new committee members.

“You can’t discuss things outside of the meetings,” Sellers said. “Any two of you on the street is a meeting if you start discussing this.”

Committee members consist of: Tommy Jefferson (District 1); Stefan Blue (District 2); Jim Ketchum (District 3); Jennifer Seaman (District 4); and Brant Helvenston (District 5).

Their next meeting will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 26.
