Girl Scouts get a lesson in Branford

Girl Scout Troop 225 was recently invited to attend a Women's Self-Defense class to earn a badge at AKKU Studio in Branford. The class was attended by leader Sabrina Erney, co-leader Angie Fennell, Jessica Erney, Haley Smith, Ariana Fennell, Morgan Shattuck, Echo Powers, Danielle Barker and Shelly Stormant. The owner and teacher, Tim Walker, is a 4th degree black belt in American Kempo Karate. He has been teaching Karate since 1992. He was assisted by Robert Williams, a long-time student of Mr. Walker's, 3rd degree brown belt, BHS student and Boy Scout.

The Girl Scouts learned basic self-defense maneuvers and, most importantly, how to stay out of a situation in which they would need to defend themselves physically. A Suwannee County fifth grader mesmerized students, parents and faculty during the Suwannee Intermediate School Spring Talent Show Thursday evening.
Brittanie Powell performed “I Will Always Love You” which was immortalized by the late Whitney Houston. It was Brittanie’s first performance and she selected the song a few weeks ago after watching a contestant perform it on American Idol.
