CRA sets one year milestones

Live Oak — The Live Oak Community Redevelopment Agency held its vision workshop on Tuesday night to establish goals for the upcoming year. The workshop, which was followed by the CRA board meeting, provided a map of projects that could be completed within a year.



Warren Street

The future of Warren Street remains quite hazy to those trying to see into the future. Currently, the buildings that were condemned due to the sinkhole that Tropical Storm Debby flood waters caused is set for demolition sometime in the near future. Once the buildings are removed, the city can then look to fill the sinkhole and repair the damage to the street. Once repairs have been made, landscaping and planning can be put into action. But until then, Warren Street remains an eyesore for downtown Live Oak.



Parking

One of the main concerns that local authorities receive consistently is the need for more parking in the downtown area. Hearing the need, the CRA has begun a parking study and will work to improve city parking within the year.



Clock tower and message board

Live Oak City Councilman Keith Mixon proposed constructing a clock tower and message board between Live Oak City Hall and Howard Street. Mixon said it’s time to let people know where City Hall is and inform the public of their meetings.

Mixon said many people come into Live Oak and find it a challenge to find the building. The building is adjacent to Howard Street and faces White Avenue, therefore, it gets overlooked by much of the general public.  

The second reason he believes the clock tower and message board is needed is to help further inform the public of meetings at City Hall with the hopes of creating more community involvement.



Sidewalk on Helvenston Street

Public Works Director Brent Whitman was directed by the Live Oak City Council to begin the planning stages to construct a sidewalk along Helvenston Street. According to Whitman, the layout currently in place will extend the sidewalk from White Avenue to Suwannee Health Care. Whitman said his staff is in the final stages of planning. Once the plan is complete, he will present the plan to the council for approval and authorization to advertise for bidding contractors.



Downtown directional signs

Another project on the list for the CRA is to develop signs for the downtown area.

The signs will guide visitors to the historic district and distinct locations within the city.

“When you’re traveling through Live Oak and you’re a visitor, you have no clue where the historic district begins and where it ends,” Mixon said. “The next thing you know, you could be in Branford.”

Once approved by the Florida Department of Transportation, the CRA board hopes to have the signs installed within the year.
