Rotary awards and scholarships presented

• The motto of Rotary International is: "Service Above Self; He Profits Most Who Serves the Best." In that spirit two outstanding Live Oak Rotarians, J. D. Henry and Alfred T. Airth, gave unselfish and distinguished service to their community. Their service is honored annually when awards are given in their name. The Henry-Airth Service Award committee identifies graduating seniors who carry the promise that they may become citizens to whom the torch of service may be passed. This vital distinction defines the outstanding nominee. From a field of those nominees three were chosen for the award. They are: Shelby Brothers, winner, John-Walt Boatright, runner-up and Kristin Goff runner-up.



• The Gretchen Brinkman Scholarship Award is given to a graduating senior who is going to college with a major or minor in music and/or the arts. The award decision is based on motivation, need, contribution to the arts and scholastic excellence. This year's Gretchen-Brinkman award winner is Josh Bartolotti.



• The Rotary Vocational Scholarship Award is a cash gift given to a student enrolled in the Suwannee-Hamilton Technical Center. The Rotary Vocational Scholarship is presented to a student who is serious about their educational training, plans to pursue a job based on the training they are receiving, have financial need for assistance and are successful students, capable of passing any state certification or license exams. Monica Cherry is the 2009 winner of the Rotary Vocational Scholarship Award.



• Interact is Rotary International's service club for young people ages 14 to 18. The Suwannee High School Interact Club is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Live Oak, which provides support and guidance. The club is self-governing and self-supporting and each year is under the leadership of a student board of directors and officers. Each year the Rotary Club of Live Oak also gives an award to the current Interact president. This year's president and award winner is David Badgerow.
