Live Oak —
The Suwannee County Grand Jury met behind closed doors on Wednesday, Nov. 7, to hear the case involving FHP Trooper Derek MacLaren, 33, who shot and killed Brent Blevins, 25, following a high speed chase and traffic stop in late August. The jury returned a no true bill, which means the jury found no reasonable cause to believe a crime was committed, according to Felony Clerk Trudy Meeks.
On Sunday, Aug. 26 around 2:05 p.m., MacLaren conducted a traffic stop on Blevins following a vehicle chase on US 90, east of Live Oak. When the vehicle came to a stop, Blevins exited the vehicle, reportedly with a gun. He was reportedly shot between four and five times and died on route to a Gainesville hospital.
Third Circuit State Attorney Skip Jarvis presented the jury with the evidence from an investigation that was conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
It was Jarvis’ recommendation that a jury be used to review the case.
Following the shooting, MacLaren was placed on administrative leave for three days before returning to work.
