Live Oak —
Suwannee County School Board members have heard the voice of the public and they will now decide if they will reconfigure the three Live Oak grade schools or not. The board will meet for a special meeting on Tuesday, March 12 at the Suwannee County District Office at 6 p.m. Board members will cast their vote and decide the future of the schools.
The schools to be voted on for reconfiguration are Suwannee Primary School, which currently offers Pre-K through first grade; Suwannee Elementary School, grades 2-3; and Suwannee Intermediate School, grades 4-5.
If approved by a board vote, the schools would be transformed into three distinct elementary schools that would all offer Pre-K through fifth grade which would go into effect in the 2013-14 school year.
Superintendent of Schools Jerry Scarborough held three town hall meetings in late January and early February to gather input and to answer questions from teachers, parents and concerned citizens.
“We had three talk meetings at each of our (grade) schools and we heard a lot of positive comments as well as some negative comments,” Scarborough said. “We certainly feel like we’ve given them an opportunity to become familiar with (the proposed) reconfiguration. We encourage our parents, teachers and staff and citizens to attend this meeting to give us final thoughts.”
If reconfiguration passes, the future names of the schools will be addressed in future workshops and meetings.
