Branford High hosts Girl’s Basketball Jamboree

Live Oak — The Second Annual Girl’s Basketball Jamboree was at the Branford High School gym Nov. 8, at 5:30 p.m.

Teams were invited to participate from the following places in some of the surrounding counties: Branford, Live Oak, Dixie, Union, Madison and Bell.

“This isn’t like a typical jamboree,” said BHS Athletic Director Wade Cashwell. “The teams played two halves with different teams each half with the clock running.”

Cashwell explained that it was his idea for the jamboree and that he had to contact the Florida High School Athletic Association to get permission since it was a bit different than teams playing actual entire games.

Cashwell felt pretty good about the BHS team as he’s known most of them since they were in sixth grade and has been working with them for several years.

“I lost two seniors last year,” said Cashwell. “They came in as seniors though and were not part of the core structure.”

Currently, they have 12 girls on the varsity team and 11 girls on the junior varsity team. Cashwell was very pleased as this is an unexpected high number for the teams’ participation. However, he was a bit apprehensive as he admitted they had only one practice prior to the jamboree.

The jamboree is more of a gauge for the coaches than a game for the girls to determine their teams’ strengths and weaknesses.

“I had three girls coming in from volleyball, so we didn’t have any time,” said Cashwell.

Cashwell also has some multi-talented girls this season as they’ve proven to be flexible in being moved from one position to another if needed.

“I’ve been able to move one from perimeter to the inside,” said Cashwell. “I’ve also moved one from interior to perimeter.”

He plans on working the girls through the Thanksgiving week as with all that time off, he wants to keep them seasoned and ready.

The final scores for the Branford Bucs was a loss of one point to Union in their game with a final 16-15 and a greater loss to Madison with the final being 19-8.
