Suwannee wrestles way to 5-1 record

Suwannee High School wrestlers will go into districts Feb. 5, with a 5-1 record.

The Bulldogs ended their regular season by defeating Bradford High School 54-15, Jan. 28 at SHS.

The Bulldog’s also competed in a 24 team tournament at Raines High School Jan. 22 and 23. Suwannee had five wrestlers out due to injury and sickness with nine of the 14 weight classes.

They placed second to the District 6A Camden County High School of georgia. Seven of the wrestlers placed in the tournament. Placing third for Suwannee was Jacob Wainwright (103 lb.), 125 lb. Josh Key (125 lb.) and John Boatright (135 lb.). Second place finishers were: Logan Register (160 lb.) and Joe McMillan (215 lb.). The champions were Aaron Fountain (119 lb.) and Travis Laxton (112 lb.).

Laxton also received the outstanding light weight wrestler award.

The guys competed against 150 plus schools in eight tournaments this season. Of the eight tournaments the ‘Dogs had a thirteenth place finish in the prestigious Durant Tournament. They also had one second, one third and one fourth place finish. The ‘Dogs also had two championships, including the victory of The Billy Saylor Tournament.

The Suwannee wrestlers will compete for the District 2-1A title this coming Friday at 2 p.m. at the SHS gym.
