The Branford High School Buccaneers girls varsity basketball team played two games and won one and lost one at the Ft. White Holiday Tournament on Dec. 27.
The Bucs first game was against the North Florida Christian Eagles which they won with the final score of 38-28.
The first quarter, the Bucs took the lead by two with the quarter ending with 7-5. The second quarter, the Eagles were able to grab the lead with it ending 15-12 Eagles. After the half, in the third quarter, the Bucs came back bringing the score to 28-22 Bucs on top. The final buzzer sounded with the Bucs taking the game with 38-28.
The second game was against the Ft. White Indians who took the win with the final score 50-33.
“We showed up, but we didn’t play like we should have,” said BHS Athletic Director and coach, Wade Cashwell. “We won the one that didn’t matter. When we played Fort White, we should have been more competitive.”
The Indians dominated the game from the beginning as the first quarter ended with them on top with 10-9 score. Their lead only increased from there. By the half, the score was 22-15 Indians. The third quarter ended with the score 40-25 Indians and when the final buzzer sounded, the score was 50-33.
“It’s always tough at Christmas time with the break,” said Cashwell. “A good team will keep on it and keep it where they were before the break.”
Cashwell then went on to say that he knows he does have a good team, but they just weren’t focused as they should have been.
