The Suwannee Middle School wrestling team hit the mat Oct. 26 for the first time this season.
The first day of official practice yielded over 40 students. For two weeks prior to the start of the 2009-2010 season, the entire team had been attending the 21st Century after school program at the school. The program has afforded the students time to work on that day’s assignments, as well as follow a designed curriculum, including physical activity. Attendance in the program is mandatory and will take place prior to the start of daily practice.
This year’s team returns a number of wrestlers from last year. North Florida champions Shawn Brown, Hunter Cason and Jerry Willis all return for their 8th grade season. Dallas Ogburn, Dalton Cone, Sasha Key, Keegan Mathis, Robert Rodriguez and Bryce Bucsok will also bring experience back to the mat. With almost 30 first-year wrestlers, the team hopes to have a successful season.
Nov. 21 will mark the date of the inaugural Dawghouse Duals hosted by SMS. The competition will begin at 9 a.m. at the gymnasium. The public is always encouraged and invited to attend and support the team’s efforts.
The team, coaches and parents wish to thank all the individual and corporate sponsors that help to make this season a reality. Your support is greatly appreciated.
