Suwannee Lady Dogbasketball hammers Bell

The Lady Dog basketball team hosted the Bell Lady Bulldogs Nov. 29 and showed the girls from Bell who the real Dogs were. The final score was 59-33 with Suwannee leading by 30 at one point in the fourth period. It was the Lady Dog show as Suwannee controlled the ball for all four quarters and easily defeated Bell.

The Bell team only scored five points in the first period. Suwannee was up 11-5 at the buzzer. By the end of the half the Lady Dogs were up by 10 25-15.

Suwannee's girls put on a show in the third period. The Bell Lady Dogs were unable to score until the final minutes of the period where they scored three points. At the end of the third Suwannee led 43-20.

In the final quarter, Suwannee subbed in every player from the bench. All Suwannee girls got good time on the court against Bell.

Cheretta Ross led the Lady Dogs with 25 points. Shasmin Montigue had 10 points. Angela Jelks had eight, Dominique Reed seven, Shalisa Cuyler four, Laronda Butler three and Jasmine Jefferson scored two points.

According to the Suwannee coaches, Cheretta Ross' stats have her as one of the top female basketball players in the state. Coach Kaffa Owens said the team is down to 12 girls but they are working very hard. "The way they are playing is a real blessing," Owens said. "We're down to 12, I've been trying to get some more girls, but 12 will be just fine."

Owens also said she wanted to give the Rev. Jeffrey Dove some of the credit for the girls' success. Dove, a former high school and college basketball forward, gives the girls sound basketball advise as well as spiritual support. "He's been a real blessing," Owens said.

Suwannee's Lady Dog basketball team is currently 3-1 for the season and 1-0 in district play. The Lady Dogs will host district opponent Ridgeview on Dec. 12 in the Suwannee High gym. Game time is 6 p.m. for the JV with the varsity Lady Dogs hitting the court at 7 p.m. Go Suwannee!
