Varsity Dogs take victory in double header

Suwannee summer varsity baseball took the victory in a double header against Lincoln High in Tallahassee June 8. Both away games, the Dogs won 3-2 in the first game and 5-4 in the second.

The Dogs used one pitcher over the course of five innings for both games. Daniel Tillman pitched for the first game. Sean Ryan pitched for the second game.

Coach Vernon Wiggins said the number of pitchers used over the course of a game depends on each game and how well the pitchers are performing.

The leading hitter for the first game against Lincoln was Mike Staley. He played a 2 for 3 with two singles.

The leading hitter for the second game against Lincoln was Alan Michael Gibson.

Gibson played a 3 for 3 with a double and two singles. He had one RBI and one stolen base.

“We won these games because of good, solid pitching and timely hitting,” said Wiggins.

So far, the summer baseball league is four and one.

During the summer, players practice and refine skills to determine who will fill each position for the up-coming school year.

“During the summer the emphasis is on pitchers throwing strikes and having good location and control. For the hitters it’s to develop a good, consistent swing,” Wiggins said.

The coach said there are no new varsity players for this year.
