Summer Dogs lose exciting game

Suwannee Summer Dog baseball fought hard but lost a tough one 13-17 to Wakulla Thursday, June 15. The Dogs were coming off an away 10-2 victory over Wakulla the night before. “We had a chance to win it in the bottom of the ninth,” Summer Dog Coach Vernon Wiggens said. “We had the bases loaded with two outs but couldn’t get it done.”

Suwannee started Ty Smith on the mound against Wakulla. Smith got into trouble immediately, giving up eight runs. Sean Ryan came in and pitched the last third of the inning and continued into the fifth.

Ryan held the Wakulla team scoreless while Suwannee gradually ate into a nine-run deficit. After two innings, the score was 1-10. After five, the score was 9-10.

The Summer Dogs unloaded on Wakulla in the third scoring four runs. Wakulla trotted out a new pitcher in the fifth which did not stop Suwannee. The Dogs scored four more runs in the fifth.

Ryan was relieved by Mack Murray in the sixth who held Wakulla to one run. Lee Radford knocked in the tying run in the bottom of the ninth. The game went into extra innings with an 11-11 tie.

Derrick Warren relieved Murray and gave up six runs before Coach Wiggens sent Evan Maulden in to relieve him. Maulden pitched the remaining two-thirds of the inning but the damage was done. Suwannee came out and gave it their best shot, scoring two runs in the bottom of the 11th. It wasn’t enough and Suwannee lost 13-17.

Look for more Summer Dog baseball at home with the varsity squad tonight against Madison County. This is always a tough rivalry. come out and support them Dawgs. Game time is 5 p.m.

Suwannee’s JV Summer Dogs are at home against the Lake City travel team Thursday night. Game time is 5 p.m.
