Bullpups: Florida Star Conference Champs

Takes championship in final seconds of game

Live Oak — For the first time since 1998, the Suwannee Middle School football team went undefeated claiming the Florida Star Conference Championship with a 20-14 victory over the Madison Central School Broncos Nov. 1 at Paul Langford Stadium.
“They’ve (Madison) only lost one time this season and that’s to us,” said Bullpup head coach Brad Scarborough.

The Bullpups came out in the opening drive marching 64 yards in eight plays scoring on a nine yard pass from Steven Anderson to Jamari Wheeler making it 8-0.

The second quarter was a defensive slugfest with both teams being unable to move the ball which led to punts. Just before the half, Suwannee was able to score on a 4th and goal from the 18-yard line with a speed option reverse to Jamari Wheeler to put the Bullpups up 14-0 going into the half.

The third quarter, the Broncos came out inspired and drove the ball 56-yards scoring on a short touchdown run making it 14-6 ‘Pups. The third quarter ended 14-6 with both teams’ defenses cranking things up preventing any further scoring. Madison was able to tie things up 14-14 with under a minute left in the game. After Steven Anderson returned an impressive kickoff return to the Madison 48-yard line, Anderson was able to connect to Wheeler again on a beautiful 48-yard touchdown pass that put the ‘Pups up 20-14, sending the Suwannee faithful into frenzy.

Suwannee was able to put the game away with two quarterback sacks. Most of the game was a defensive battle with linebackers Sam McMillan and Darrius Mcquay leading the way and Arantez Hunter blowing things up from the nose tackle position all night.

“All year, this team has fought through adversity, coming from behind or losing momentum, but they’ve been able to dig deep and find what it takes to overcome hurdles,” said Scarborough. “There was no better feeling for me and the other coaches than seeing everyone on the field sharing in the celebration of this great accomplishment. This was how it was in the 80s and 90s and I foresee it being that way in the near future.”
