Live Oak —
All good things must come to end. The Suwannee High School JV ladies soccer team went into this game knowing full well that this would be their toughest match of the year. They were down one player as their Sweeper, Adrianna Canjay was pulled up to play the varsity game due to injuries. The JV ladies were coached all year for this possibility and they were up to the task.
Ridgeview scored first and often and were up 5-0 just 25 minutes into the game. Suwannee scored its first goal with five minutes left in the first half on a breakaway by captain Shan Johnson. Ridgeview went up 6-1 but about five minutes later, Suwannee got their second and final goal of the night with a direct kick off the post and in by Megan Letu. The final score was 7-2 Ridgeview and they finished their regular season 10-2-0. Suwannee’s J.V. team finished an amazing year with a 10-1-1 record. Speaking of records, they set some and they are:
Regular season milestones
- Second best record in school history
- The First JV team to beat Florida High in four tries
- Never shut out as they scored at least one goal in every game.
I’d like to thank varsity head coach Darrel Curls for the opportunity to coach, varsity assistant coach Tommy Brett for all his help this year and coach Bill Harris for filling in when needed and bringing the JV ladies to the next level.
On behalf of myself and the JV Lady ‘Dogs, thank you for your interest in our team and we’ll see you next October. - Doug Mabey
Varsity
The varsity team was facing a similar task facing them as the team was even more successful than their JV counterparts.
This game started out as an interesting defensive battle and there was no score half way through the first half. Ridgeview scored first 24 minutes into the game but Suwannee struck back with just under two minutes left in that half with a pretty re-direct assist by Denver Cameron and a shot by Kelsey Parlato over the goalies head. Ridgeview pressed hard and scored another goal at the one minute mark to make it 2-1 at the half. Ridgeview continued their scoring assault with four more goals before Suwannee scored again with 10 minutes left in the game by Kelsey Parlato with the assist by captain Grace Brett. Ridgeview scored their final goal under two minutes left for a final score of 7-2.
Ridgeview finished their regular season 14-1-1 and Suwannee ended theirs at 10-7-2. Three JV players have been pulled up for the district playoffs and they are Megan Letu, Adrianna Canjay and Patricia Jurado. Suwannee’s real season starts on Tuesday, Jan. 15 as the 6th seed in Jacksonville against Atlantic Coast on their field.
