Branford JV cheerleaders win state

Branford — The Branford junior varsity cheerleaders went to Daytona Beach this past weekend to compete in the annual American Championship and took the gold.
The event was held Friday and Saturday.

“We go every year to the American Championship,” said Cheerleader Coach Tracy Lamb. “They’ve been doing their routine since last summer.”

Lamb said that her girls all range from seventh to ninth grade and that they compete for two days for the event.

“I want to say kudos to the choreographers of the routine, Taylor Hatch and Dustin Baker,” said Lamb. “They’re both alumni Suwannee High School cheerleaders.”

Lamb also wanted to note that a team of the girls competed recently at UF and won the Top Team award.

“The girls practice on the field,” said Lamb. “They can’t use the gym right now because of basketball. A good percentage of them play softball and basketball also.”

Lamb said that although some of the girls are graduating, it shouldn’t affect the team too much.

“I’m losing four girls to varsity,” said Lamb. “It’ll still be predominantly an old team.”

At present time, Lamb as well as other competitors are unaware of how many teams they actually were up against for the two days.

“They staggered the teams this time,” said Lamb. “They’ve never done that before and probably won’t again due to too many complaints.”

She went on to say that the judges had three different divisions competing at the same time which made it very confusing.

Lamb added, “Maybe it was good, so we didn’t get nervous.”
