Underdogs to top dogs
stephenie.livingston@gaflnews.com
Going into the state tournament last Friday, the Suwannee High School wrestling team was ranked as merely honorable mentions. Still, the underdogs came away with two state titles and six top ten finishes. They wanted it the most, said wrestling coach David Laxton.
"All my life I have worked toward this moment," said Travis Laxton after winning a state title.
Joe McMillan also won a state title, while Jamie Alvarado, Jacob Wainwright, Aaron Fountain, Josh Key, Logan Register and John Boatright all placed in the top 16.
"Going into the state tournament we were only honorable mentions. This did not sit well with the boys nor myself," said coach Laxton. "They just turned a negative into a positive and they believed they could win it all."
Coach Laxton said his boys fought for the wins and would not let up. "You could see they wanted it more and more," said Laxton. "It was right up until the last whistle blew, and they still believed that they could win."
McMillan won 6-2 and Laxton won 8-1.

Old Oaken Bucket rivalry taking center stage
LAKE CITY-Entering its 21st year (20th statewide) the Beef O‘ Brady’s High School Football Scoreboard Show is celebrating a milestone this season.
As a thank you to all of his loyal supporters, host Steve Berrey is going back to some of his favorite stops on the statewide tour. Among the 11 scheduled 2010 stops is the Old Oaken Bucket rivalry November 12 between Suwannee and host Columbia.
It’s one of the state’s oldest rivalries and I can’t go to it at Suwannee (no Beef O Brady’s there),” Berrey said. “It’s been a while since I have been there (three years), so I wanted to say thank your for 20 years. I have been there once but never been to the Old Oaken Bucket game, but I’m really looking forward to it.” -

From the sideline: Be careful what you eat
The next time you bite into a nice juicy hamburger, hot dog, sausage dog, chicken sandwich or nachos you might want to take a look around at the facilities.
ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” reviewed health department inspections for food and beverages outlets at all NHL, NBA, MLB and NFL teams in 2009.
At 30 of the venues (28 percent) more than half of the concession stands or restaurants had been cited for at least one critical or major health violation, Such violations pose a risk for foodborne illnesses that can make someone sick or, in extreme cases, cause death. -

One in a million
Years from now when Branford alumni gather for a reunion, chances are they will be talking about John Perry. Athletes like Perry don’t come around often at a small community like Branford.
Early on Perry dominated competition whether it was on the football field, basketball court or on the track.
Perry, who will head to Tusculum University, capped off quite a senior season this past year being named first team All-Area by the Gainesville Sun after accumulating 1,852 rushing yards, 313 receiving yards, 1,105 return yards and 33 touchdowns offense and 62 tackles on defense. - More Suwannee Sports Headlines
