Going into the state tournament last Friday, the Suwannee High School wrestling team was ranked as merely honorable mentions. Still, the underdogs came away with two state titles and six top ten finishes. They wanted it the most, said wrestling coach David Laxton.
"All my life I have worked toward this moment," said Travis Laxton after winning a state title.
Joe McMillan also won a state title, while Jamie Alvarado, Jacob Wainwright, Aaron Fountain, Josh Key, Logan Register and John Boatright all placed in the top 16.
"Going into the state tournament we were only honorable mentions. This did not sit well with the boys nor myself," said coach Laxton. "They just turned a negative into a positive and they believed they could win it all."
Coach Laxton said his boys fought for the wins and would not let up. "You could see they wanted it more and more," said Laxton. "It was right up until the last whistle blew, and they still believed that they could win."
McMillan won 6-2 and Laxton won 8-1.
