Semi-annual yard sale to benefit local students in jeopardy

Live Oak — For almost 15 years, a semi-annual yard sale has been held to raise funds for Suwannee High Schools’ exceptional student education class. However, this November the fund-raising endeavor that has been widely popular may not happen.

ESE yard sale coordinator and ESE teacher Candy Vickers cited storage space for the items to be sold as the main concern for having to possibly cancel this year’s event, which is made possible through the efforts of a few teachers and volunteers.

For several months before the sale, parents, students and others would collect all the items donated, then categorize and have them boxed up and ready to go. This has grown over the years and has now caused the problem of where to put it all for that amount of time.

A room at the high school was previously used for the sales’ storage. It was about twice the size of a normal classroom and could accommodate 100’s of boxes at a time, but it’s no longer available. Vickers said It’s been converted back into a classroom.

“It’s no ones fault, there’s just no room,” said Vickers. “The kids are asking when they are going to Busch Gardens or Disney. That may not happen this time.”

Vickers said the money received from the yard sales is important and goes toward class projects, a before prom dinner for students and field trips and she is open to suggestions on how to keep the yard sales going. She said that after the students supplies and clothes are paid for there is usually, on average, about $2,000 left for the other projects and field trips.

“It’s always allowed the students to feel and be a part of the community,” said Vickers.

Another reason for the possible cancelation of the sale is lack of support from parents, Vickers said. For the few that are willing to participate, it’s been tough. Vickers did say of past sales, “Some teachers and the ROTC would help to move and set up.”

For now, the sale will cease to exist, unless storage space, and more help, is given.
