Opinion: The Democrat says

Live Oak — To the Suwannee County taxpayer:

We support economic growth and job stability. We support taxes to our schools, our local governments, the water district, and all others that would benefit from the taxes received from Klausner Lumber One, LLC.

What we want to see, however, is more language in the contract that will protect you. The reverter clause in the contract needs to stay, in our view. We want to make sure that we get title to the land that we will be giving the company back if they don’t keep their end of the bargain.

Now, we won’t go into the actual wording of the contract or the definition of certain words, such as “expects”, “anticipates” or “plans”. A good lawyer can argue that a word can mean something else. I think most people reading this can recall President Bill Clinton’s infamous “It depends on what the meaning of the word ‘is’ is” during his impeachment proceedings.

To the county:

What we want is for you and Klausner to come to terms on this contract and soon. We want to see $1 million extra a year for our schools. We want to see folks employed in good paying positions right here at home. We need this for our future and our kids’ futures. Don’t let this slip by. Bring us the jobs.

The last public hearing to be held on this matter is this Tuesday, Sept. 18. This could very well be the date the county votes once and for all to allow a state-of-the-art sawmill to be built here.
Support the project, but also support the county’s efforts to protect you, the taxpayer.

Be at the meeting Tuesday night. The Klausner contract should come up before the board at or around 7 p.m.
