Live Oak —
It wasn’t at the local Elks Lodge on East Howard Street the elk was spotted. No, this four-legged creature was observed in the Badcock & More store on South Ohio Avenue.
On Sunday morning, Sgt. Kyle Kirby of the Live Oak Police Department was traveling south on Ohio when he observed the visitor standing in the store’s parking lot.
“It’s not everyday that we encounter these types of situations in Live Oak because these animals are not native here,” LOPD Det. Justin Bates stated.
Kirby then tried to approach the Elk, but it ran across Ohio Avenue into a field at the intersection of Grand Street and Canyon Avenue. Kirby determined the Elk belong to a Live Oak resident who raises these animals for sport. Kirby was able to contact the owner who quickly responded to the scene.
“The Elk was tranquilized and returned to the farm for a good nights rest,” Bates laughed. "Thanks to the quick thinking of our patrol units, the Elk was safely removed and no one was hurt."
