Local man robs store with BB gun

Wife was the getaway driver, says sheriff’s office

Live Oak — A local man and his wife joined efforts to carry out an armed robbery on Saturday, Sept. 8, at the One Stop Store, located on US 90 East in Live Oak, according to a Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office report.

As stated on the report, at approximately 4:54 p.m. on Sept. 8, John Paul Layne, 28, of 210 NW Scriven Ave., Live Oak, entered the store wearing sunglasses, a baseball cap and a bandana. Layne approached the store clerk with a BB pistol and demanded money from the cash register. After Layne obtained the cash from the drawer, he then exited the store and got into a 1998 Chevrolet van, driven by his wife, Jennifer Lynn Layne, 28, same address, reports the SCSO. The husband directed her to turn onto 89th Road (Lundy Lane), where he got out, took off the clothes he was wearing and placed them into a duffle bag. John Layne then threw the bag into a wooded area on the side of the road, which was later recovered.

The report stated that the couple proceeded back on US 90 towards Live Oak where a traffic stop was conducted on the van by a Florida Highway Patrol officer. John Layne reportedly gave his wife an undisclosed amount of cash to hide in her clothing just prior to the stop, the SCSO reports.

The couple was taken into custody and transported to the Suwannee County Jail.
John Layne was charged with armed robbery with a deadly weapon and violation of probation on the original charges of burglary of a dwelling and grand theft. Jennifer Layne was charged with armed robbery with a deadly weapon.
