What’s next for the
Klausner project?

Live Oak — On Tuesday, the Suwannee County Board of County Commissioners voted 3-1 to roll out the red carpet for Klausner Lumber One, LLC, a company which may construct a state-of-the-art sawmill near the US 90 West and I-10 interchange. Now that the county has agreed to the development, the question is “what’s next?”

As of press deadline, the county was still waiting for the contract to be signed by Klausner. Without Klausner’s ink on the contract, the company is not obligated to call Suwannee County home and, like any other business, can still negotiate with other interests. The Democrat contacted Klausner’s attorney, Michael Kraus, who confirmed that Klausner officials were in his office on Thursday, but did not comment on whether or not their intentions were to sign the contract.

At the Tuesday meeting, the commissioners voted to award all bids for the project based on the “contingent that they [Klausner] sign the contract.”

“The ball is now in their court,” County Administrator Randy Harris said. “I believe we’re in a better position to meet the needs and timeline of Klausner than anyone else.”

Although the board approved the final draft of the contract, this project that has been in the works for nearly two years is far from completion.

The county is set to start clearing, grading and compacting the site. According to the contract, all site developments and improvements to the land by the county must be complete by March 30, 2013.
