Head to Mayo for Pioneer Day festivities

Music Friday night and festival Saturday

Mayo — Pioneer Days festivities begin Friday, Oct. 12 with live entertainment by the Saltwater Cowboys, along with some local entertainment under the gazebo at Veteran’s Memorial Park in downtown Mayo from 7-10 p.m. Food and drink vendors and art and craft booths will also be open throughout the park.

On Saturday, Oct. 13  thousands of folks will converge on the town of Mayo for the annual Pioneer Day festivities, sponsored by the Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce. Additional sponsors are Daddy's Gun Shop, Central Florida Land and Timber, Bishop Law Firm, Howland's, Badcock of Perry, Suwannee Valley Electric, Daniels Funeral Home, Mayo Town and County Animal Hospital, Buckeye of Perry, Drummond Bank, Progress Energy, First Federal, and Subway of Mayo.

Saturday morning the Pioneer Days parade will travel down Main Street beginning at 10 a.m. and end at the park where an exciting day of fun, food, crafts, kids’ activities, and more live entertainment will celebrate the pioneer spirit of days gone by. The local writer’s group will also have a booth at the park and will have their books available for purchase.

Saturday’s featured entertainment is Band of Brothers, The Singing Carters, Vocal Edition, Signs and Wonder Drama Team, Mountain Dew Cloggers, Larry Simmons, Lyndie Burris, Virgina Fletcher, Jessica Johnson, Angelic Praise Dance Team, Jill Barrs, Will Alfonso, Mike Hawkins, Leta Hawkins, Tallahassee Bag Pipes, Lafayette High School Band, Chad Eagan and others.

Don’t forget to check out the awesome Pioneer Days Art Show in the lobby of Lafayette State Bank across from the park from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event, which draws participants from Lafayette, Madison, Perry and Suwannee counties, is sponsored by the Mayo Woman’s Club. This year’s theme is “Farming in Lafayette County”.

Artists and crafters will be participating in categories under Fine Arts, Photography and Crafts. Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded, including a Best of Show award sponsored by Lafayette State Bank. 

The overall theme this year for Pioneer Days is ‘the way things were during the ‘Pioneer Days’, so come out and enjoy the refreshing atmosphere of Lafayette County of years gone by.
