Suwannee elections office gearing for Nov. 6

Live Oak — The Suwannee County Supervisor of Election’s Office closed the books on new voter registrations and is now preparing for the 2012 general election. Early voting will begin on Saturday, Oct. 27, and will go through Saturday, Nov. 3.

“We have had many new registrations,” stated Supervisor of Elections Glenda Williams. At the closing of the books on Oct. 9, Suwannee County has 25,071 registered voters. Of the multitude of people registered to vote, 12,593 are labeled as Democrat and 9,037 bear the Republican Party affiliation. Only 3,441 are registered as minor party affiliation or have no party affiliation.

Many residents in the county have already started requesting absentee ballots, and as of Wednesday, the office had issued 3,876 ballots.

“We have issued more for this election than for any election since I have served as supervisor of election,” Williams stated. “We are having approximately 70 new requests each day, give or take a few.”

As of Oct. 15, the office had received 1,217 completed ballots by mail or by the voters bringing them into the office. Of the ballots turned in so far, 634 are Democrats, 501 are Republicans and 82 are minor party or have no party affiliation. Williams noted that in the general election, a person can vote for whom they choose regardless of party affiliation.

The Nov. 6 ballot will be the largest in Suwannee County with 19 offices and 11 state constitutional amendments to decide.

The amendments that are listed on the ballot were published in a format to make them easy to understand in the Oct. 5 edition of the Democrat as well as here on this website.

Sample Ballots were mailed to each household to further assist the voters in understanding the process of voting and what they’re voting for. If a person is needing more time for reading and voting, they are encouraged to request an absentee ballot by calling the elections office at 386-362-2616 or by visiting their website at www.suwanneevotes.com. The ballots must be mailed or brought to the office by 7 p.m. election day, Nov. 6.

Early voting will take place Oct. 27-Nov. 3, and individuals can cast their vote at the Supervisor of Elections office or at the library in Branford. Voting hours will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday-Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
