Bed bugs reported in 2 Live Oak schools

Live Oak — Bed bugs have been reported in three classrooms in two separate Live Oak grade schools, according to school officials.

The “very mild introduction” of the pest was identified in one classroom at Suwannee Elementary School and two classrooms at Suwannee Primary School, according to Director of Student Services, Elizabeth Simpson.
“We recently became aware that there has been an isolated introduction of bed bugs into the Suwannee County School System,” a letter being sent home to parents today reads. “To date, however, there is no evidence that bed bugs have been identified at all schools.”

Bed bugs are a pest that are not known to spread disease from their bite.

“The bite does not hurt at first, but it may become swollen and itch, much like a mosquito bite,” the letter states.
Parents should watch for clusters of bites on their child which are usually found in a line.

The district states that the source of the pests cannot be determined as they can be found in many places including lodging facilities, planes and movie theaters.

“Even though it is unlikely for bed bugs to infest a school, our maintenance department will conduct an inspection and, if needed, implement an integrated pest management plan in the area where the bed bug was found,” the letter states.

Simpson said that the district wants to emphasize that this is a “very mild introduction”.

“The most important thing to remember is that bed bugs are a national problem and that no community is immune,” she said. “Also, the district appreciates proactive support of everyone working together on this matter.”
