Live Oak —
Suwannee County Commissioner Jesse Caruthers continues to improve in a Gainesville hospital following complications from a ruptured spleen.
Caruthers was taken to Shands Regional Medical Center in Live Oak on Friday, Sept. 14 where he was given the diagnosis of a ruptured spleen before being transferred to Shands Cancer Center and Trauma Unit in Gainesville for care.
Caruthers underwent surgery and has been in the intensive care unit since.
Caruthers’ daughter, Misti Caruthers Smith, informed the Democrat Thursday afternoon of Caruthers’ condition.
“Dad is still in ICU and is expected to be there for the next few days then moved upstairs for possibly another week before he can come home,” said Smith. “His progress has really improved the last couple of days. His doctors are expecting him to make a full recovery. On behalf of my dad, mom and sister we would like to thank everyone for their concern, phone calls, visits but mostly their prayers we know they are working.”
Smith said doctors had Caruthers sitting up in a chair Wednesday.
Caruthers has been the District 1 county commissioner for the past 12 years.
