FEMA to begin damage assessments Tuesday

Live Oak — Florida Emergency Management Director Brian Koon confirmed Monday morning that preliminary assessment of damages caused by Tropical Storm Debby is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 3 for Suwannee County.
Koon confirmed the date to the Suwannee Democrat Morning at the Suwannee County Emergency Operations Center in Live Oak where he was visiting.

An announcement by the Florida Division of Emergency Management on Sunday stated that Gov. Rick Scott made a request to President Barack Obama that the state of Florida receives a Major Disaster Declaration to assist Florida counties that were impacted by Tropical Storm Debby.

State officials say the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will review Gov. Scott’s request and advise President Obama on whether to issue a declaration. If a declaration is made, individual assistance could be granted to qualifying counties.
According to Koon, about 20 teams from the state and FEMA commenced joint preliminary damage assessments for individual and public assistance in Baker, Bradford, Columbia, Pasco and Wakulla counties on June 29. Gov. Scott’s initial request is based on the preliminary damage assessment findings for individual assistance for those five counties.
Koon added the scope of this request will be amended in the coming days to add requests for public assistance in the above listed counties, as well as individual and public assistance for additional counties based on the results of the preliminary damage assessments that are currently being conducted. He added that in order to meet the threshold to qualify for assistance, Suwannee County must be assessed at $3.39 in damages per person or about $140,668.05.
In a June 29 blog, FEMA Director of Public Affairs Lars Anderson acknowledged that FEMA is working closely with the Florida Division of Emergency Management assessing the flood damages.
“We are currently conducting damage assessments along with the state to determine if additional support is needed for local governments or affected individuals,” Anderson wrote.
