Live Oak —
A former state correctional officer at Suwannee Correctional Institution faces charges for accepting payment to introduce cellular phones into the state prison, according to records from the Suwannee County Jail.
Reports show the charges stem from events occurring in April, 2011. Authorities say that Kelly Dewayne Morgan, 31, 429 SW Wallnut Street, Lake City, accepted money from an inmate’s family, in exchange for him to use his official position as a correctional officer as a means to introduce cell phones into the institution.
According to reports, the charges are supported by sworn witness testimony and cell phone records that reflect that Morgan, while employed as a correctional officer, conspired to introduce contraband and communicated with inmates(s) in person and on a cell phone the inmates had behind the fence at the institution. Officials say that Western Union money transfer receipts show that Morgan received $300 directly from an inmate’s mother and $400 indirectly from an inmate’s brother.
Records show that Morgan has been charged with solicitation of unlawful compensation and attempted introduction of contraband into a prison. According to DOC Public Affairs Director Ann Howard, he is no longer employed with the DOC.
