Hamilton County receives check from water district for payment in lieu of taxes

Jasper — On Tuesday, Oct. 2, Steve Minnis from Suwannee River Water Management District presented a check in the amount of $37,752.42 to the Hamilton County Board of County Commissioners as payment in lieu of taxes, otherwise known as PILT funds.
“Ann Shortelle, who is our new executive director was called away out of town, so she could not be here and she sends her apologies,” said Minnis.

Shortelle, he said, would like to come back at a later date with her presentation to the commissioners. Minnis said he didn’t want to hold up the delivery of the check to Hamilton County, which is why he stepped in for Shortelle.

Minnis explained that SRWMD gets the funding from the water management lands trust fund, which is funded through the state.

“Fortunately, our legislative delegation has been very supportive in getting the water management districts some funding through that trust fund, because without that we could not go back to our community to deliver the PILT check,” said Minnis. “Our legislative delegation deserves a lot of credit in ensuring that SRWMD does receive funding. A portion of that goes toward the PILT check and to our community.”
