The City of Live Oak will hold its 2012 General Election on May 8, according to Suwannee County Supervisor of Elections Glenda B. Williams.
Three of the five nonpartisan city council seats will be up for grabs during the election and nine candidates have officially qualified to run for those seats.
Live Oak resident Jimmy Cherry has qualified to challenge District 2 Councilman Benny Thomas for the council seat he holds. With just two candidates, that race will be decided during the May 8 primary, Williams said.
District 3 Councilman David Burch will not seek reelection, but three candidates are seeking to fill the seat that Burch will vacate. Those candidates include Jacob L. Grantham, William J. “Jimmy” McCullers and J. Quinn Skierski.
While District 5 Councilman James E. “Ed” Rewis will seek another term, he faces challengers David Blevins, Annette Loston and Keith Mixon.
A June 12 runoff election has been scheduled for any races that may require a runoff to be held, according to Williams.
In addition to electing three candidates to fill the city council seats, voters will be asked to approve or disapprove nine proposed city charter amendments. During its Feb. 14 meeting, the Live Oak City Council voted 5-0 to accept the recommendations of a recent charter review committee and present the voters with the proposed amendments for their consideration. Each of the amendments will be presented on the ballot individually, Williams stated.
According to Williams, early voting for the city’s General Election will begin April 30 and continue through May 5. The hours for early voting are 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. April 30 through May 4 and 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on May 5.
Early voting will be held at the Supervisor of Elections Office in Live Oak at 220 Pine Ave. S.W.
