Volunteering in the Lafayette community

Mayo — On Saturday, Feb. 16, members of the Lafayette High School football team and girls volleyball team helped to serve their community by volunteering at the Seven Gables Food Ministry.

Seven Gables on US 27 across from Farm Bureau Insurance has grown to serve nearly 1,000 residents each month on every third Saturday. It is staffed by volunteers from local churches and this past Saturday students from Lafayette High School also joined in.

The boys football team and girls volleyball team told Pastor Matt Swain from Brewer Lake Baptist Church in Day that they wanted to get involved and they were eagerly welcomed. Swain said it was hands down the largest volunteer day since Seven Gables Food Ministry began 18 months ago.

“Our high was November 2012, where 1,100 were served in a month,” said Swain.

Along with dry goods in brown paper bags, and USDA allotments that were given in the office area, all these volunteers were able to give out meat, bread, water, coffee, juice and condiments as people exited the building. Each brown bag weighed between 20-30 pounds, Swain said.

The amazing Hornets from LHS worked from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday and helped to serve 700 people in two hours.
